German Premiere: “Accused # 1: Nelson Mandela” (English Original) Sunday, 29 September 2013 at 17h00, Hackesche Höfe Kino, Berlin

On the occasion of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of one of the politically most significant trials – the Rivonia Trial -, AfricAvenir and Iwalewa House Bayreuth invite you to the German Premiere of the documentary film „Accused # 1: Nelson Mandela“ (English Original Version) by Pascale Lamche on Sunday, 29 September 2013 at 17h00. Between October 1963 and June 1964, key leaders of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the military arm of the African National Congress (ANC) as well as members of the South African Communist Party (SACP) were tried for Sabotage, attempted overthrow of the Apartheid regime and communist activities, among them Nelson Mandela („Accused # 1“), Walter Sisulu („Accused # 2“), Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba, Ahmed Kathrada, Andrew Mlangeni, Elias Motsoaledi, Denis Goldberg and Lionel Bernstein. The defence of the nine accused was led by Bram Fischer.

On 20 April 1964, the last day of the audition before the rendition of the judgement, the accused had the right to speak, which is when Mandela delivered his famous speech „I am Prepared to Die“ from which stems the folowing statement:

“During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

„The most brilliant film of the year"  London’s Telegraph

A discussion with Dr Ben Khumalo-Seegelken as well as a small reception in the foyer will follow the screening.
