RE/VISIONS: Poetry, Performance and Resistance: An Evening With Award-Winning Kenyan Artist-Activist Shailja Patel

On Saturday, 7 November 2009 at 7.30 p.m. AfricAvenir in cooperation with House of World Cultures will host the Germany Premiere of Award-Winning Kenyan Artist-Activist Shailja Patel‘s spoken word performance "Poetry, Performance and Resistance", followed by a discussion with the artist. The event will take place at Café Global in the House of World Cultures in Berlin.nShailja Patel brings audiences to their feet from Cape Town to Nairobi to Vienna. Her Spoken Word Performances are an anthemic call for a new generation of Africans to reconnect gut to heart to voice. To challenge icons and claim our own power. To sing ourselves back from our violent histories to new ways of knowing and living the truth. A founding member of Kenyans For Peace, Truth and Justice, Patel created a groundbreaking program to train grassroots Kenyan activists in political advocacy. She received a prolonged standing ovation at the 2007 World Social Forum in Nairobi and recently edited a special issue of Pambazuka News on the Kenyan Crisis. She is a powerful and eloquent voice for a truly representative democracy in Kenya, rooted in equity and justice for all Kenyans. More details on: www.shailja.com

For Berlin, Shailja Patel has prepared a performance on Kenyan politics and culture, radical social movements and the histories of colonialism on the African continent, always cross-cut by the topics of race and gender.n„The poetic equivalent of Arundhati Roy" — The Gulf Today (United Arab Emirates)n"One-woman poetic explosion"  –  SABCn"Exemplifies globalization as a people-centered phenomenon of migration and exchange." — CNNn"Shailja Patel brings out what it means to be a woman in an empire"  —  San Francisco Chroniclen"Sets her audience on a collision course with what they know and how they learned it. Stunning and politically charged theatre that will leave you moved, awakened, angry…inspired."  —  Daily Nation, Kenya
